School’s Out: A Storage Guide for College Students

School’s out! In most cases, this usually entails sleeping in, binging Netflix, marathon-ing Fortnite, and wasting the summer away. But for college students, there is generally more responsibility involved before jumping into the summer break festivities.

Whether you are moving out of a dorm or an apartment, StorAmerica Self Storage has you covered! Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re ready to lock your belongings away until the next school year:

SIZE

For students who have never used storage, this is likely the most common question – what size do I need? Typically, students who live in dorms won’t have much in terms of volume. Smaller items will usually fit into a 5×5 to 5×10 storage unit (a storage locker may even be suitable for those with very few items). On the other hand, students living in off-campus housing may find their hands a little fuller, as larger, self-supplied furnishings such as beds and couches obviously take up more space. These instances may require somewhere between a 5×10 to a 10×10 storage unit.

Of course, your mileage may vary based on exactly how many possessions you have and how large they are. Also, keep in mind that storage unit dimensions are calculated based on length by width, so the height variance may differ depending on the facility. Just be prepared to size up or size down, if needed.

PRICE

The next common question is how much does storage cost? Just like with size, self-storage rates vary based on several factors. These factors include facility location, available inventory, access level, and any active discounts or specials. At StorAmerica and our affiliated stores, we have a great year-round move-in special for all customers – students or otherwise. This comprises of a $29.99 security package fee, which includes our tenant protection plan and a FREE lock which is yours to keep. Becoming a tenant with us also comes with some great perks, including free use of our truck (see below for more information)! All of this comes to $0 for your first month’s rent!

Additionally, our month-to-month leases are perfect for short-term rentals, and you can vacate at any time without penalty.

TRANSPORT

Now you’ve decided to take the plunge and move your stuff into storage for the summer. The next question is how are you going to get it there? Some students are fortunate enough to have a car, which may solve most, if not all of the problem. But what if you don’t have a car, or what if your items are too large?

There are big name truck rental services available to remedy these situations, but if you store at StorAmerica, we grant our new tenants free use of our moving truck! This includes either a straight-up truck rental, or you have an option for our truck and driver service (the latter of which involves one of our associates driving to your location and back to the property). The allotted time, mileage, and gas are all 100% free! Waiver and deposit no longer required.

We understand moving can be a drag, for students especially (and let’s face it, moving back in with your parents for the summer can be the most stressful part of the process). With several stores across Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada, many of our locations are within close proximity to major college campuses. Check out our website castorage.com for more details. StorAmerica is here to help you ease the burden of moving and allow you more time to enjoy your summer!
